Year C Trinity 3/Proper 8 Luke 9:51-62 "All Age" Talk/Introductory Talk
Has anyone here ever forgotten to do your homework, or forgotten to do something at work?
What excuse did you make? Has anyone ever made up a ridiculous and untrue excuse?
There are some web site that list excuses students can use for failing to do their homework.
These include:
I didn't do it because it would add to your already heavy workload
I lost it fighting this kid you said you weren't the best teacher in the school
Another teacher took it as an example of neatness.
I didn't do my homework because I was making a paper mache shrine of you, and I ran out of paper, so I used my homework
I had a slushie and my brain froze.
My little sister ate it
I fell asleep on it and when I woke up all my drool smudged all the ink
Pants, Did I bring the wrong folder again?
My dad took it to work. He's an astronaut.
I made a paper plane out of it and it got hijacked.
I put it in a safe, but lost the combination.
Some aliens from outer space borrowed it so they could study how the human brain worked.
I hid it under my pillow so I wouldn't lose it, and the tooth fairy took it.
I was working on my Spanish homework so much, when I got to yours, I couldn't think in English.
Jay Leno, the American talk show host shared a conversation he had with the then President Ronald Reagan. Reagan was sharing some regrets that he hadn't works as hard at school as he might have done. He concluded by modestly saying that he might have made more of a success of his life if he had!
If we forget to do our homework or work we can make an excuse and it will probably not ruin our lives. But in today's gospel, Jesus warns that we shouldn't use lame excuses not to follow Him. He needs people who will be totally committed to Him. Who will tell other people about Him. Who will serve Him. If we do this we can enjoy eternal life and so will people who hear and see our witness and come to faith themselves.
